On May 29th, 2013, the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office began investigating a complaint on one of its officers, Deputy Wade Smith. The investigation dealt with the improper handling and recovery of property seized from a defendant in a case investigated by Deputy Smith on November 2nd, 2012.
During the investigation it was learned that Deputy Smith confiscated a large amount of Marijuana, money, and a handgun and did not document this in any report or recover the property correctly. Deputy Smith advised that the narcotics were destroyed, the weapon was discarded and all of the cash was turned over to a relative of the defendant. As a result, it was determined at a minimum that Deputy Wade Smith violated Sheriff’s Office policy and procedures and was terminated Thursday, June 4th, 2013.
The entire findings were forwarded to the District Attorney’s Office for review. Deputy Wade Smith was hired with the Sheriff’s Office March 2nd, 2002. On Tuesday, July 30th, 2013, the case was presented to a Grand Jury who subsequently indicted Wade H. Smith on the charges of Tampering with Evidence and Violation of Oath of Office.
A Grand Jury Arrest warrant has been issued for Smith’s arrest. Smith’s attorney is making arrangements to have Smith turn himself in to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office. More details will be provided as they become available.
